6 Tips for Finding the Best Running Shoes

To select the best running shoes for your needs you gotta do some homework. It involves thinking. The great variety of really high quality shoes for running can make the purchase quite of a challenge for both novices and experienced triathletes. The process of buying can be dramatically simplified if you follow the next tips for choosing the best running shoes.

  1. Revise your needs. You need the best shoes you can afford for your money. Therefor try to avoid situations where someone tries to convince you into buying a particular model just because it is the hottest thing at the moment and every John and his uncle are buying it. The best running shoes are made to satisfy the unique requirements of runners and triathlets. Shoes for other sports like basketball or aerobics may seem nice and comfortable as well, but they will not meet your requirements as dedicated running shoes will do. Consider where you are going to use your shoes (indoor, outdoor, terrain: field, street, sand...) and what kind of wheather conditions are to expect there (heat, rain, ice, snow). You will need different pairs and change them frequently if you run a lot and may stick with one pair if you only go out when the sun is shinning.
  2. Make a research. After you have done your homework you can go online and start to screen the various models, user experiences, forum posts and testimonials. Another option is to go to your local sport store and ask them for help. Compare models for experienced runners or beginners in triathlon – the shoes will vary a bit in their configuration and price as well. Beginners tend to go for comfort while advanced triathletes check to meet their race requirements: fast transition, durability, grip...
  3. Try different models on. The best thing now is to go to a real shop – forget about Internet delivery. You have to try out a good amount of different models offered in the market. Try them on with the socks you will use during your exercises and races. The thickness of the socks has a great influence on your comfort when running.
  4. Ask questions. If you cannot make your choice among two or more models, that all look to be the best choice then don't be afraid to ask the shop assistant for help. I never buy running shoes without chatting with a competent seller on the newest technologies before to decide for myself what is innovative and what is simply hype. If you don’t receive the proper information or if you don’t understand their running jargon, postpone the purchase and look for another shop or assistant. Good shop assistants understand that they don't need to impress you with junk terminology but rather need to help you find out what you want. Of course you can always go back online and find tons of information regarding running or triathlon on related forums or ask a more experienced friend for suggestions. A lot of experienced triathletes will be happy to help you finding the best shoe for your needs.
  5. Size. Of course, the best running shoes are the ones that fit perfectly. If you have problems in determining your exact shoe size ask for help. It should go without mentioning but just for the sake of completeness: Both shoes have to be wide enough, especially at your toes. You should be able to move them easily. The heels of your shoes have to fit properly without pinching or rubbing. When two close sizes are available and your are sure that both are your best fitting running shoes, than go for the bigger size.
  6. Comfort is probably the most important aspect. The sense of well-being of your feet during running is a critical factor to determine the best choice of running shoes. Try on both shoes and make a walk in the store. Even better take a short run outside if that is possible - I can do that at my preferred vendor.
